Cataloger Uncovers Scandal: “It was Unrequited Love”

Like the other catalogers here at AAS, part of my job as the Graphic Arts cataloger is to figure out the artists, sitters, publishers and others who contributed to the works in the collection. So when I catalogued a large color lithograph view of Portland, Oregon from 1891, I noticed that the copyright holders were not listed in our catalog. And although I usually check the Library of Congress’s authority file to see if the firm is established, I went right to Google. When I found nothing solid there, I went to the newspapers. Keep Track of Your Newborns DNA

by David Pincock Secret DNA databases cataloging citizens of the U.S might sound like science fiction but recently the Department of State Health Services of Texas was caught doing just this. It was found that 800 blood samples from newborns across Texas were taken, without permission, for the purpose of creating a DNA database. A law passed in 2002 in Texas allows for blood samples to be taken without consent so authorities apparently felt they could also use this blood for research with consent as well. A frightening tale but is this where the world is heading anyways? [Texas Tribune] Many advocates feel that DNA databases could be an invaluable tool for finding missing persons or solving crimes. The ability to accurately and consistently identify any living person is more realistic every day. This is such a polarizing topic within the science community due to the privacy concerns of such databases. So what do our readers think? Comment Below.

from the shelf to a mountain of books

Organizing and cataloging have turned into a bigger endeavor than I had originally anticipated. I had purchased the book cataloging software from Collectorz.com, it utilizes the Cuecat scanner to scan barcodes on books and then upload all the ISBN information into their software creating a wonderful and easy to use database. I love this software and definitely recommend it to anyone who has a large library.Yesterday afternoon, I had decided to scan the few volumes I had on my small 3 shelf bookshelf. I hadn't planned on so many volumes, I had wrongly assumed that since most were paperbacks/trade paperbacks that there wouldn't be so many. I had already scanned most of the volumes previously but as I continued it was 200 volumes that I had scanned as the afternoon progressed into night. Unfortunately now most of these volumes are neatly stacked in piles on the floor until I can go through and rearrange the books by genre, the alphabetize them. Yeah I'm hardcore like that. :).As I
